Avian influenza: what employers need to know

There have been several outbreaks of avian influenza (bird flu) in the UK. Although bird-to-human transmission is rare, it can happen — especially for people who work in close contact with infected birds, such as farm or processing workers.

UKHSA guidance on exposure management

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently issued updated guidance for managing exposure to infected birds and animals. While primarily for public health teams, the guidance is also relevant to site managers and employers working in high-risk environments.

Key principles include:

  • Keep the number of people exposed to infected birds or areas to a minimum
  • Restrict access to affected premises or zones
  • Ensure all exposed individuals receive appropriate training
  • Use suitable personal protective equipment (PPE)

HSE PPE requirements for working with infected poultry

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides additional guidance for those working in environments with suspected H5 or H7 avian influenza. Recommended PPE includes:

  • Disposable or polycotton coveralls (CE type 5 or 6) with head coverage
  • Disposable nitrile or vinyl gloves, or heavy-duty rubber gloves that can be disinfected (avoid latex)
  • Rubber or polyurethane boots that are easy to clean
  • FFP3 respirator with exhalation valve
  • Close-fitting goggles or face protection providing equivalent safety

Next steps for employers

Where avian flu is suspected or confirmed, organisations should:

  • Restrict access and reduce the number of people exposed
  • Train workers on correct PPE use and infection control procedures
  • Ensure PPE is provided, used correctly and disposed of safely
